The New City of Hamilton

RE: ‘Tied vote on urban expansion’ (June 14).

Within Hamilton’s current boundaries, there are many derelict properties already hooked up to municipal water and sewers. They are also in areas of paved roads, public transit, schools, shopping areas and hospitals.

Recycling of these properties for residential purposes should be a priority for the new City of Hamilton council. The City should seize tax delinquent properties and sell them or tear them down to make way for new, affordable housing, including retirement-type homes in the core.

By recycling derelict properties, there’s no need to build new roads and stretch services. Imagine the savings.

This requires a lot of courage and the new councillors may have to be daring and spit into the wind.
